I’m probably gonna cave and start writing Murderbot fic…. I haven’t written fic in months so uhhhh this should be fun 😂 gonna start off with some short, unambitious slice of life type stuff and see where that takes me. I think the last fics I wrote were short bits for Whumptober…

Prompt suggestions would be appreciated! just know I may or may not actually get to them. I just need to get the inspiration rolling, ya know? I’ll keep a running list of ideas below the cut. Some of these MAY end up being used for art prompts too…

i made a few silly little ART phone backgrounds in the spirit of the inofficial fandom shenanigan renaissance! thank you so much for inspiring me to do this @the-yearning-astronaut!

i love reading sad books bc when your own grief is stopped up inside you like a clogged drain you can grieve for a character on a page and understand that you’re also grieving for yourself a little bit

‘There is a theory that watching unbearable stories about other people lost in grief and rage is good for you—may cleanse you of your darkness. Do you want to go down to the pits of yourself all alone? Not much. What if an actor could do it for you? Isn’t that why they are called actors? They act for you. You sacrifice them to action. And this sacrifice is a mode of deepest intimacy of you with your own life. Within it you watch [yourself] act out the present or possible organization of your nature. You can be aware of your own awareness of this nature as you never are at the moment of experience. The actor, by reiterating you, sacrifices a moment of his own life in order to give you a story of yours.’

-Anne Carson, ‘Grief Lessons: Four Plays By Euripides’

Stories are full of impossibilities to teach us to bear the unbearable.

I talk to many people who say things like “oh I have trauma but I don’t have PTSD”, but then when I talk to them a little more I realize that they most likely do, they just can’t recognize it as such due to how lacking PTSD awareness is, even beyond the whole “it’s not just a veteran’s disorder” thing.

The main reason they think they don’t have PTSD usually has to do with flashbacks and nightmares, either they have one but not the other or have neither. But here’s the thing, those are only two symptoms out of the 23-odd recognized symptoms. Flashbacks and nightmares are two of the five symptoms under Criterion B (Intrusion), which you only need one of for a diagnosis. The other three symptoms are unwanted upsetting memories, emotional distress after being reminded of trauma and physical reactivity after being reminded of trauma (i.e. shaking, sweating, heart racing, feeling sick, nauseous or faint, etc). Therefore you can have both flashbacks and nightmares, one but not the other, or neither and still have PTSD.

In fact, a lot of the reasons people give me for why they don’t think they have PTSD are literally a part of the diagnostic criteria.

“Oh, I can barely remember most parts of my trauma anyway.” Criterion D (Negative Alterations in Cognition and Mood) includes inability to recall key features of the trauma.

“Oh but I don’t get upset about my trauma that often because I avoid thinking of it or being around things that remind me of it most of the time.” Criterion C (Avoidance) includes avoiding trauma-related thoughts or feelings and avoiding trauma-related external reminders, and you literally cannot get diagnosed if you don’t have at least one of those two symptoms.

“Oh I just have trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep, but I don’t have nightmares.” Criterion E (Alterations in Arousal and Reactivity) includes difficulting sleeping outside of nightmares.

“But I didn’t have many/any trauma symptoms until a long time after the trauma happened.” There’s literally an entire specification for that.

Really it just shows how despite being one of the most well-known mental illnesses, people really don’t know much about PTSD. If you have trauma, I ask you to at least look at the criteria before you decide you don’t have PTSD. Hell, even if you don’t have trauma, look at the criteria anyway because there are so many symptoms in there that just are not talked about.

PTSD awareness is not just about flashbacks and nightmares.

The urge to bother my mutuals

I miss the part of fandom where people just left off the character tag if it was a negative/unpleasant sort of thing about the character.

(or use the #character critical or #anti character). It was nice.

I don’t know if it was purely my sort of fandom experience but…it was nice.

No I 100% agree. It drives me absolutely nuts that people seem to almost gleefully tag negative posts with the characters’ and fandoms’ primary tags and never add a tag for negativity, discourse, or wank.

I remember when any posts with negativity about the characters or ships or writing or whatever would be tagged with #wank or #[fandom/character/ship] wank which would make it so easy to filter for those of us that had no interest in engaging with that sort of thing.

Like. The least people could do is not tag anything at all and censor the names win the post itself or whatever so the post didn’t end up in the tag searches for any reason. But no. People can’t seem to do that either. Which is why it feels like people are purposefully using the primary tags just to bitch and complain and make others miserable.

Hopefully, if you live anywhere in Southern California you’ve heard that an unprecedented tropical storm is headed our way this weekend (probably Sunday & Monday). Hurricane Hilary is currently a Category 4 storm and may increase to a Category 5 overnight, but will very likely downgrade to a high energy tropical storm by the time it hits land.

If you live in the inland deserts or eastern side of the coastal mountains: this is potentially a very dangerous storm! Some areas may see 2-3 years worth of rainfall in 24 hours. There will likely be flash floods, mudslides and power outages. Please be prepared! You should think about getting out to a more coastal area or to Arizona if possible. If you’re living in a trailer/mobile home or your car, please do whatever you can to get your household anywhere else.

It’s less likely to be nasty where I live (inland Los Angeles County), but there’s going to be high winds, intense rain and thunderstorms; burn areas may see mudslides. Power outages are very likely, and I’m preparing for one.

Dr. Daniel Swain is a climate scientist/weather geek/science communicator who’s very knowledgeable about California weather. Lately he’s been doing some livestreams on his YouTube channel WeatherWest. There is one from today about the current conditions and predictions, and he’s expecting to livestream tomorrow, Sunday, and Monday to talk about the impacts. He’s really great at explaining how these things work in plain(ish) language.

If you are not from California, it’s almost impossible for me to explain HOW WEIRD THIS IS! It’s fucking strange. We normally get zero precipitation in August. None. Not a bit. Not even ¼". Zilch. We’re expecting from 3"-11" depending on where the storm makes landfall.

The wall behind the structure is dark blue. There are three wires connected from the structure to SecUnit via a panel on the inside of its right arm. It’s wearing a long-sleeved shirt that is covered in blood from a gaping hole in its chest and three projectile weapon wounds. It is also bleeding from its mouth and nose. Its left hand rests gently on one of ART’s drones, which is semi-spherical and has multiple arms with tools. One arm is grasping SecUnit’s left sleeve. \END ID]

Transport Crate

TFW there’s a scene in your head you really really wanna draw but one of the characters doesn’t even have a corporeal form except that it does and it’s a ship. But it also has a presence and it’s that presence you need for this scene but it’s not human and you still can’t figure out how to represent it and it’s driving you up a wall.

I loved your beautiful art of Murderbot in the transport crate! It was absolutely gorgeous. I saw you mention in the replies a fic you read recently about Murderbot having to go in a transport crate, can you share the name of it?

Thank you!! I’m so glad people are liking that piece – I really enjoyed drawing it!

And I can most definitely share it!! It’s called Contents Under Pressure by Platyceriums!! 4k of pure Murderbot whump 💛

(I’ll reblog this with a direct link to the fic, so check the notes! I’d just put it here but then Tumblr would eat the post and it wouldn’t show up in the tags)

As promised, here’s the direct link!

(and a link to the referenced art in case someone missed it!)

Ya know what. I had a lot of fun making that ridiculous wallpaper. I might go make a few icon sets now too.

Time for fun throwback fandom shenanigans. Gonna tag them with #cringe is dead and ART killed it. Might make it a countdown type thing to System Collapse too just for giggles.

Apparently the first hurricane since 1939 is expected to make landfall in California this weekend. It’s expected that an entire year’s worth of rain will fall in 24-48hrs. Don’t you love climate change?

It’s expected that the hurricane will weaken to a tropical storm before making landfall in Southern California.

Still, as someone who lives in LA, this is deeply concerning. Anyone who lives in Los Angeles knows that the city is DEEPLY unprepared to handle any amount of rain, let alone a TROPICAL STORM. The tiniest amounts of rainfall cause floods in LA, because the city has no drainage systems in place. I’ve seen DRIZZLES cause floods. It takes so little rain to flood LA.

If a tropical storm truly does make landfall in LA, it will have a devastating effect on the city’s very large unhoused population. LA (along with NYC) has the biggest unhoused population in the United States, and these people will be stuck on the flooded streets.

Deeply concerning.

Coincidentally, in November 2022, researchers at UC Irvine conducted a study on how a major flood would impact Los Angeles.

image

From ABC news (s):

“In a state severely hobbled by drought and wildfires, flood concerns may not seem top-of-mind. But a new study out of UC Irvine found that Los Angeles County’s aging flood systems may not be ready for a major flood.

“Right now, our research suggests that our infrastructure and the way we’ve built it out is much more vulnerable to this type of event than I think anyone would have guessed,” said Brett Sanders, a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UCI and one of the authors of the paper.

The study expands on federal flood risk maps that do not include flooding from rainstorms, only coastal and river flooding, according to Sanders.

“For any Angeleno that drives around [in a] Southern California rainstorm, you know that you quickly find yourself in a street corner filled with water. And those risks aren’t mapped,“ said Sanders.

"So you can imagine the small amount of flooding we have in our streets on a typical winter storm. What might that look like in a once-in-100-year-storm?” he continued.

According to the study’s mid-range estimates, 425,000 people could be exposed to flooding of more than a foot, causing $56 billion in property damage in the event of a major flood.

But, those are the researchers’ “best guess,” said Sanders. The study accounted for uncertainties in how much water would flow through the area in a once-in-a-century flood.

The study’s low estimates put 197,000 Angelenos at risk of experiencing flood levels of more than about a foot and property damage at about $36 billion. On the high end, a major flood could impact 874,000 people and cause $108 billion in property damage.

The study also found that communities of color would be more likely to experience waist-high flooding.

Black, Latino and Asian Angelenos would be 79%, 17%, and 11% more likely, respectively, to experience deep flooding than white Angelenos.”

I seriously hope that the storm weakens before it makes landfall. I hope this concern becomes completely unnecessary and that it’s nothing more than a little drizzle.

For the latest updates:

As of 6:35am PDT: “HILARY REMAINS A LARGE AND POWERFUL CATEGORY 4 HURRICANE… …SIGNIFICANT FLOODING IMPACTS POSSIBLE ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE BAJA CALIFORNIA PENINSULA AND THE SOUTHWESTERN UNITED STATES.”

“Heavy rainfall in association with Hilary is expected to impact the Southwestern United States through next Wednesday, peaking on Sunday and Monday. Rainfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches, with isolated amounts of 10 inches, are expected across portions of southern California and southern Nevada, which would lead to significant and rare impacts. Elsewhere across portions of the Western United States, rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are expected.”
